Refund Credit Notes

ATOL protected refund credit notes were issued for flight inclusive package trips booked in the UK that were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. These provided you ATOL protection.

The ATOL protection provides support so that you are not at a financial loss if your travel company stops trading as an ATOL holder.

Your two options before 30 September 2022 are:

By making another ATOL protected booking using your refund credit note, if your booking is made in the UK and is for a flight inclusive package, then it will enjoy ATOL protection.

To make a new booking, check the expiry date on your credit note and contact the travel company you previously booked with.

We encourage you to take action before 30 September 2022 and always make sure your trip is ATOL protected when you pay.

You remain entitled to request a cash refund from your travel company.

To do so, contact the company you booked with and request a refund. Always read your terms and conditions, ensuring your credit note hasn’t expired.

We advise doing this as soon as possible.

 

ATOL protection on refund credit notes will end on 30 September 2022. If you accepted one of these for your cancelled trips due to the pandemic and haven’t spent it yet, you are putting your money at risk if you do not act now.

 

What happens if I don’t act now?

Your refund credit note loses ATOL protection on 30 September 2022. First check your expiry date. Even if it is valid after this date, if your travel company stops trading, you could lose out financially.

After 30 September 2022, if you are holding a refund credit note, you won’t be able to make a claim through the ATOL scheme if that travel company stops trading as an ATOL holder.

 

Does that mean my refund credit note will expire after the end of September?

Not necessarily as the expiry date for your refund credit note will depend on your travel company. However, refund credit notes will lose their ATOL protection after 30 September 2022.

For example, if you still hold a refund credit note after 30 September and the company stops trading as an ATOL holder, you will not receive your money back even if you hold a refund credit note.

If you do redeem the value of your credit note on or after 1 October for a new trip and the company stops trading after this date, none of the value of the refund credit note you used to pay for the trip will be refunded.

 

Frequently Asked Questions

If your booking is made in the UK and is for a flight inclusive package, then it will enjoy ATOL protection regardless of the amount you spend.

However, if you do redeem your credit note after 30 September 2022 for a new trip and the company then stops trading, none of the value of the refund credit note you used to pay for your trip will be refunded under the ATOL scheme.

We encourage you to take action before 30 September 2022 following our advice above.

If an additional credit was offered by the travel company, this will be subject to the terms and conditions set by the travel company. Any additional credit voucher offered is not ATOL protected.

Where an additional credit has been redeemed against a new booking, this additional credit is not ATOL protected.

You should contact your travel company in the first instance. ATOL protection for refund credit notes expires on 30 September 2022.

You should check the validity period of your refund credit note and if in doubt, contact your travel company.

ATOL protected refund credit notes were issued for flight inclusive package trips booked in the UK that were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. These provided you with ATOL protection.

In July 2020, the ATOL scheme announced that if you accepted refund credit notes for cancelled ATOL protected trips, these would continue to be covered by the ATOL scheme.

This protection applied to refund credit notes issued between 10 March 2020 and 19 December 2021.

After 19 December 2021, travel companies were no longer able to issue ATOL protected refund credit notes for trips cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If you accepted these between 10 March 2020 and 19 December 2021, you were unaffected by this change. If you accepted a voucher after this date, this is not ATOL protected.

You have the right to ask your travel firm for a refund – this will still apply after 30 September. But our advice is to do this now, to ensure you still have ATOL protection and don’t put your money at risk.

You should get in touch with your travel firm as soon as possible.

The ATOL scheme provides you with financial protection when you pay for an ATOL protected trip with an ATOL holder, if they were to stop trading as an ATOL holder. This is separate to travel insurance.
